HISTORY

POP RELEVANCY formed in January 2017 as a collaborative initiative to combine various niches of pop culture mastery and infuse them into adult learning experiences that bring joy to training and workshops. It has led to a podcast series and now a youtube channel called Nerdmerson. Some highlights are below:

  • By March of 2017, POP RELEVANCY had reached over 150 people with a workshop titled "I Was Served Lemons, But I Made Lemonade" that examines Beyoncé's visual album Lemonade through the lens of trauma-informed approach and self-care. This workshop was delivered at Arizona Serve, an AmeriCorps program of Prescott College and at the Redefining Safe Conference put on by Mobilization for positive futures in Tucson, AZ.

  • In August of 2017, POP RELEVANCY's website had received over 1000 views and had published nine articles examining the intersection of pop culture & art with real life issues and social justice themes. The pop relevancy facebook page, instagram and twitter accounts had also all launched and started receiving followers.

  • By October of 2017, POP RELEVANCY started working with the Community Justice Board, creating a workshop for volunteers that serve youth in the juvenile justice system, and help provide them with a deeper understanding of LGBTQ+ inclusivity. This workshop is titled "Stars and unicorns" and was delivered to over 50 people.

  • In 2018 & 2019, Pop Relevancy pulled back focus on social media and marketing to start putting more intention behind collaborations throughout the Tucson community. Emerson started consulting with local nonprofits to deliver training to teachers at the Sunnyside Unified School District, and Southern Arizona Children’s Advocacy Center.

  • In July 2019, Empower with Emerson Kuhn podcast series started. The podcast focuses on self-actualization through values-based leadership best practices. Promoting self-actualization through leadership, grace, power and courage we’re trying to do something to improve our culture, society and our personal development.

  • Rounding out 2019 and going into 2020, Nerdmerson officially launched on YouTube, and the website updated to reflect all of these moving pieces. Be sure to stay up-to-date by following Nerdmerson on Instagram and liking & subscribing to the videos on YouTube!
